Amazon today unveiled a new infrared device, the $35 Fire TV Blaster, that works with the tech giant’s other gadgets to give users more voice control over their TVs.

  • What it does: The device lets users extend voice control beyond Fire TV devices to their TV, soundbar, cable box and A/V receiver. Fire TV Blaster can turn the TV on and off, change the volume and channel and switch inputs. Fire TV Blaster needs help to pull off all these tasks. It requires an Amazon Fire TV device and an Echo smart speaker or display to run.
  • Who needs it? CNBC notes that the device replicates a lot of the function $120 Fire TV Cube. Fire TV Blaster is an option for users who have bought into the Fire TV ecosystem but don’t want to spend the extra money on Fire TV Cube.
  • Availability: Fire TV Blaster goes on sale Dec. 11, and it will be available in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Germany.
