Nothing quite like hovering your computer mouse over a digital map of the United States to get a better sense of how little money you’re making.

The folks at Money have offered up just such a depressing diversion with this look at the best-paying company in every state. Across industries ranging from technology to energy, real estate, health and finance, we get a look at the big salaries being paid to everyday workers from Washington state to Florida and everywhere in between.

Speaking of Washington, Seattle is home to the company offering up the highest median salary — based on 2017 data from the labor group AFL-CIO. At Tableau Software, the data visualization company, the median salary is $199,864. The company employs about 3,663 people.

With just 15 employees, California-based cancer-research company Geron Corp. is handing out a median salary of $500,250. In New Jersey, the median pay at clean-energy firm NRG Yield is $964,000.

Money points out that “experts consider the median to be a better indicator of ‘typical’ pay than the average since a few exorbitantly paid executives can dramatically skew the average upwards.”
