Uber, Sound Transit, and Seattle-area cities are partnering to encourage more commuters to use Link light rail in conjunction with the ride-hailing service. Starting today, Uber is offering a $3.50 discount for riders who enter the TRANSIT promo code when traveling to and from eight light rail stations south of downtown Seattle.

The promotion will be available for riders using the Beacon Hill, Mount Baker, Columbia City, Othello, Rainier Beach, Tukwila International Boulevard, SeaTac, and Angle Lake stations.

Uber says the promotion is intended to encourage commuters to use other forms of transportation and reduce the number of people driving to work. The partnership is also intended to fill in the transportation gaps that can make it difficult to use light rail in some parts of the region.

“We know people throughout the country are reducing their personal vehicle ownership and instead using a mix of public transit, rideshare, biking, walking and other forms of transportation,” Brooke Steger, Uber’s general manager for the Pacific Northwest, said in a statement. “This pilot program is designed to encourage even more people to move in that direction.”

The pilot is scheduled to run through Jan. 5, 2018 but Uber says its duration and scope are subject to change, depending on how the promotion is received.
