Geeks who want to get out, as in, from behind a computer and in front of nature, can do just that during the official National Hike With a Geek Day on Tuesday.

The event was created by Hiking With Geeks, a group with 13 chapters and 8,800 members across North America, including in Seattle. The aim is to help tech and science workers detox from all that deep thinking and find renewed perspective and energy by getting outside with like-minded folks.

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray even issued a proclamation recognizing the group and its dedication to objectives shared by the city, including being all-inclusive and working to support healthier lifestyles. Murray declared June 20 to be Hike With a Geek Day and slapped an official seal on the measure.

In Seattle, geeks are gathering Tuesday at Holy Mountain Brewing on Elliott Avenue West for a social event to allow people to get to know one another and coordinate on future hike locations and dates. What’s better than a beer after a good hike? More info on that meetup is here.
