Amazon is expanding its delivery locker concept into apartment lobbies, with a twist: the new lockers will accept packages not just from Amazon but from any sender, shipped via any carrier, according to the company.
The new initiative, called Hub, is a notable expansion of Amazon’s delivery infrastructure beyond its own e-commerce operations. Amazon’s existing Lockers, which launched six years ago, were designed as an alternative to receiving packages from Amazon at home or work.
With the Hub rollout, the company is broadening the concept to let people receive packages from friends and family, competing retailers or anyone else. The move could make Amazon a much bigger rival to retail mailbox stores and existing package lockers. It could also give the Seattle-based tech giant access to a trove of new shipping and customer data that provide a competitive edge.
News of the Hub delivery lockers first emerged late last week. Amazon is inviting property owners and managers to apply to have a Hub locker in their lobbies.
“Accepting deliveries from all carriers, Hub by Amazon can free you and your staff from daily package management,” the company promises on the Hub website. “It’s convenient and easy to use, making the Hub an amenity your residents will love. … Self-service delivery and trusted customer support come together to create a solution you can count on.”
These are not the familiar bright orange or yellow lockers. The company explains, “Indoor and outdoor Hubs are available, starting at 6’ wide. Choose from 4 neutral colors that blend seamlessly with your property.”
As shown on the Hub site and in the Amazon video above, the Hub lockers sport the Amazon smile but not the company’s name.
It’s the latest move by Amazon to expand its physical retail and delivery infrastructure, ranging from its Whole Foods acquisition to its rollout of the Treasure Truck into new markets across the country.
