The team is already working on “a thrilling new game world,” using Amazon Web Services and Twitch, the game streaming giant Amazon acquired in 2014, according to an announcement Wednesday.

Smedley joins Amazon after running Sony’s online business for 20 years. He’s best known in the gaming world for his work on EverQuest.

“John is no stranger to bucking trends and creating unforgettable games. It’s early days, but we can’t wait to see what John and his team create, and share it with you,” Amazon said in the press release.

Amazon Game Studios currently has 56 open positions in the Southern California region.

GeekWire reached out to Amazon’s PR team for more details on the new studio and will update this story when we hear back.
