Amazon’s Brazil homepage.

Amazon entered Brazil five years ago, but ever since it has focused its efforts on its original wheelhouse: books.

But now Amazon is expanding its online retail presence in the world’s fifth most populous nation, adding an electronics, appliances and video games marketplace in Brazil. Bloomberg first reported on the plans last week, and Amazon made it official today, with electronics items popping up on its Brazil site.

Bloomberg reports that retail stocks have slumped in Brazil in recent days following the news of Amazon’s expansion there. Amazon’s presence could disrupt several frustrating retail trends in Brazil, such as the difficulty of returns at most retailers, where it takes extensive documentation and cash refunds are rare.

Amazon has steadily expanded its global footprint over the years. Its top target has been India, but it has also made moves in Latin America, such as launching its Prime fast-shipping service in Mexico earlier this year.
