There was a time, before a certain fantasy series disrupted the entire television vehicle, when a character who died was dead. Viewers expressed their outrage, sorrow, or delight, online. They gabbed about it with coworkers the next day and after a brief mourning period, everyone moved on.

Then came Game of Thrones, adapted from George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series, where there is no dead/alive binary. Instead, characters exist on a sort of aliveness spectrum. In the months since watching the life seep out of Jon Snow, fans have hoped and theorized that the beloved bastard was just sort of dead. Or maybe just dead for now. It looks like they may be right.

Maisie Williams, the actress who plays Jon’s half-sister, Arya, heavily hints in a new interview (below) that we haven’t seen the last of Jon Snow.

“It’s really heartbreaking because people are like, ‘Yeah, but he’s coming back, though.’ There’s a great twist. I can’t say that’s he’s going to be alive.”

We’ve seen the other characters rise from the dead. Qyburn, the Frankenstein of Westeros, brought back some form of The Mountain to do Cersei’s bidding. And let’s not forget Beric Dondarrian, who rose from the dead six times at the hands of fire priest Thoros of Myr.

Here’s hoping that the return of Melisandre (a priestess of the same religion) will get our hero fired up again.
