marioNintendo this morning announced a Dec. 15 release date and a price of $9.99 for “Super Mario Run” for iPhone and iPad, the first title in the classic franchise designed specifically for mobile devices.

Gamers can “try elements of the game’s three modes for free,” the company said in its announcement this morning. However, a one-time payment of $9.99 will be required for unlimited access to the game.

Nintendo, which has been slow to make games for smartphones, announced plans for Super Mario Run in September, saying it would be a premium title but not announcing a price at the time. The game will launch in 151 countries and regions on Dec. 15, Nintendo says.

The game is meant to accommodate one-handed play, with Mario running forward on his own. A single tap makes him jump. Here’s a video showing the gameplay.
