Windows 10 mobileMicrosoft is finally bringing Windows 10 to mobile phones running previous versions of Windows Phone starting today. While the initial list of upgradeable phones is short, Microsoft is working with manufacturers and carriers to bring the update to more devices in the coming weeks.

The initial upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 will be available for the Lumia 430, Lumia 435, Lumia 532, Lumia 535, Lumia 540, Lumia 635 (1GB RAM), Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL, Lumia 735, Lumia 830, and Lumia 930. That means some devices already running Windows 10 through the Insider Program will still have to wait for an official upgrade.

“As Windows 10 delivers significant new innovations, many older devices are not able to successfully upgrade without an impact on the customer experience,” said Michael Fortin, corporate vice president of the Windows and Devices Group, in a blog post. “Our goal is to only offer the Windows 10 upgrade to devices that we are confident can continue to deliver a good customer experience.”

Users can check on the upgrade compatibility with a new app as well: Upgrade Advisor will check if the update is available for your device and help free up space needed to install the update by moving photos, videos and other files to OneDrive or an SD card. The app will also move them back into place after Windows 10 is installed.

The update brings Cortana upgrades and introduces Continuum and Windows Hello to mobile devices. Windows 10 Mobile has been available on Microsoft’s latest Lumia devices—the 950 and 950 XL—since they launched, but this is the first time that users will be able to upgrade older phones to run the latest software.
