Docker has experienced rapid growth and adoption, as evidenced by the sold-out crowd of more than 4,000 people attending DockerCon 2016 in Seattle this week. GeekWire buttonholed some of the DevOps folks attending the conference this afternoon and asked five developers what, if anything, they thought could be improved with the leading application-containerization technology.

Geoffrey Grosenbach

Geoffrey Grosenbach, Seattle:  “I’d say they should make a Mac version, but they just did. I’m excited to try it. More community support would be a good idea. I’m using mostly [development environment] Vagrant and virtual machines, and sometimes I’ll go through three or four before I find one that actually works as advertised. So keeping various packages up to date would be good.”

Paul Luo

Paul Luo, Vancouver, B.C.: “From what I’ve learned, Docker is a simple tool. It’s very easy to get up and running. I want them to make it as open and accessible as possible. As the security and features build up, keep it the way it got started. Don’t put in too much magic. Show me how you do things. I’ll pick what I need and leave the rest out.”

Michael Jesko

Michael Jesko, Atlanta: “I’m still learning so much about it. I’m trying to figure out what shortcomings there are. It looks like Docker itself doesn’t have a solution if the data resides outsides the container to make sure the data comes along with the application containers. I’m finding that companies like EMC and NetApp are filling that gap.”

Pushkala Jayaraman

Pushkala Jayaraman, Philadelphia: “I’d like to see better instruction manuals. I’m not one of the high-end nerds; I’m still learning. We work in genomics, and for us Docker is way for us to get to production deployment with ease. How do you uninstall? Reinstall?”

Sekhar Sankaramanchi

Sekhar Sankaramanchi, San Jose: “In any product there’s a lot to improve, all the time. Docker storage is still in its infancy. I see 10 storage companies here trying to do the same thing. There is no clear-cut solution. On the networking side, there is only one interface to the container. The moment you put two interfaces to the same container, nobody knows how to do it. So there are still some problems to solve.”
