aws2Migrating to the cloud is less of a strain with guidance from trained professionals, and with that in mind, Amazon Web Services has announced a new credential for individuals and firms experienced in doing migrations. The credential, dubbed a “competency,” joins AWS’s existing competency program.

AWS partners — Amazon’s term for those it has worked closely with or trained — can win a competency in migration delivery or migration consulting, according to a blog post Wednesday by Jeff Barr, AWS’s chief evangelist. Such partners “provide solutions or have deep experience helping businesses move successfully to AWS, through all phases of complex migration projects, discovery, planning, migration and operations,” Barr said in his post. They have “demonstrated technical proficiency and proven customer success in migration.”

Already, 17 partners have been certified as migration delivery partners, while six others are migration consulting partners. The difference is that consulting partners usually have more limited roles than delivery partners. Delivery partners either are or have a relationship with an AWS-audited managed-service provider that provides ongoing support.

Nine partners are certified for their migration technology. Some partners are certified in more than one category. The partners that have won the migration competency are listed in Barr’s post.

Added June 10 after hearing back from AWS: To receive a migration competency, AWS consulting and technology partners must provide at least five references from AWS customers for whom they have migrated at least 10 applications each. Consulting partners must have at least 10 AWS certifications, including two professional-level certifications. Delivery partners must have at least 30 certifications, including eight at the professional level. Technology partners must be able to support their offerings in at least three AWS regions, meet AWS security best practices, offer professional services to support usage and provide a specific type of licensing model.
