Actor Adam Driver, fresh off his role as Kylo Ren in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” will put down his lightsaber to star in “Paterson,” a comedy from director Jim Jarmusch that will be the next original movie from Amazon Studios.

Jarmusch (“Stranger Than Paradise,” “Dead Man”) also wrote the movie, which will debut in theaters in 2016. Before “The Force Awakens,” Driver made his mark on the HBO comedy series “Girls.”

“‘Paterson’ is a funny, philosophical and moving story that only Jim can tell. We look forward to working closely with him and supporting his vision in bringing the film to life,” Ted Hope, the head of Motion Picture Production at Amazon Studios, said in a news release. “Adam Driver is one of this generation’s most gifted actors. It’ll be exciting to see what he and Jim unearth as they explore the intimate and richly textured world of ‘Paterson.'”

The company’s first feature film, Spike Lee’s Chi-Raq, debuted last year.

Amazon Studios, known for hit TV shows such as “Transparent” and “Man in the High Castle,” is coming off a successful night at the Golden Globe Awards where “Mozart in the Jungle” won Best TV Series (Comedy or Musical) and actor Gael Garcia Bernal won Best Actor in a Television Series.
