recoverywater11Drinking special water will prevent you from getting a concussion. That’s the claim Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson made today on Twitter.

The 26-year-old is an investor in Reliant Recovery Water, a Tacoma-based company that says its nanobubble and electrolyte-filled water provides a number of health benefits.

“Proven through scientific research, using recovery water will help reduce pain and inflammation from your active lifestyle; accelerate recovery from injury and muscle related stress; decrease fatigue for higher energy during activity; speed muscle recovery after activity; and deliver better hydration and an increased sense of well-being,” the company notes on its website.

Wilson tweeted this today:

Wilson also referenced Recovery Water in Rolling Stone magazine, which profiled the star quarterback in its most recent cover story that went online today. Wilson references a teammate whose “knee healed miraculously” due to the water — perhaps it was Kam Chancellor, the Seahawks safety who also promotes the drink  — and added that he experienced similar recovery speed after a big hit to his head during last year’s playoffs (though he didn’t suffer a concussion).

“I know it works.” Wilson told Rolling Stone. “Soon you’re going to be able to order it straight from Amazon.”

Recovery Water cites studies conducted by the University of Florida and Seattle Sports Medicine which found that those who drink Recovery Water two-to-three times per day “experienced less muscle damage and 20% decrease in muscle fatigue. The company also pointed to articles The American Physiological Society Journal of Applied Physiology and the Hindawi Physiology Journal.

There is no mention of preventing and/or recovering from concussions on Recovery Water’s website. We’ve reached out to the company to find out more about Wilson’s comments and will update this story when we hear back.

Here’s more about the science behind the water from Recovery Water’s website:

Scientists from a Tacoma, WA-based biotech company have developed Recovery Water using a special electro-kinetically modified process. In this process, Recovery Water is infused with charged nano-structures, which are proven safe to consume and highly effective in promoting healthy cells.

Our scientists have effectively enhanced the water without changing the natural, healthy properties of it. Recovery Water tastes, looks and hydrates just like water but also improves the body’s natural recovery process.

Given how much attention, time, money, and resources are going toward preventing concussions in sports — particularly with youth — Wilson’s claim that a drink can prevent injury is a bit questionable. NBC Sports noted how the Federal Trade Commission could get involved given its rules around celebrity endorsers making false claims.

Wilson’s tweet certainly sparked some reaction on Twitter:
