Star Wars fans poring over the Force Awakens teasers and trailers have likely noticed one conspicuous absence. We’ve seen Han, Leia, even Chewbacca — but not one glimpse of the original trilogy’s intrepid hero.

So, what gives? Many fans have hypothesized that Luke succumbed to temptation like his father and crossed over to the dark side.

After the trailer was released, the Huffington Post published a spirited defense of the “Evil Luke” theory. When an interviewer recently asked Star Wars: Episode VII director J.J. Abrams what he made of the theory he said this:

“I saw that too, which I’m always interested in seeing peoples’ theories. What will be cool is when people finally see the movie and see what it really is, hopefully some people will say, ‘Oh I was right’ and other people will be like ‘alright,’ but that’s what you want. You want people to be debating things before the movie even comes out. It’s the dream.”

Abrams also confirmed that no more trailers will be released, so it looks like fans will have to wait until December to find out Luke’s fate.
