Google’s new Compute Engine pricing.

Google kicked off what’s sure to be another pricing war in the public cloud services arena today by dropping the price of all its Compute Engine instances by roughly 10 percent. It’s an attempt to attract more companies to the Google Cloud Platform, which is in tight competition with Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.

googlecloudplatformThe permanent discounts announced today come six months after Google announced a slate of significant pricing changes at its first Cloud Platform Live event in San Francisco. If past is prologue, Google’s announcement today will kick off a pair of similar cuts from Amazon and Microsoft. In March, Amazon announced a slate of discounts just one day after Google’s price cuts.

Microsoft, which has said that it will match any discounts Amazon makes, followed shortly after with its own set of pricing drops.

Knowing Google, there are more changes to the company’s cloud platform coming soon – it’s hosting another Cloud Platform Live conference in San Francisco on Nov. 4. The company says that event will give users more insights on where its platform is going. It also just so happens to be a week before Amazon holds its big AWS re:Invent conference in Las Vegas.

The discounts will keep coming, too: Google said in March that it’s trying to keep its prices in line with Moore’s Law, which means that the company will be making more cuts in the future.
