icebrg - logo 2Icebrg.io, a Seattle-based security startup, has raised $2.5 million in a round of seed funding led by Madrona Venture Group, with participation from Formation 8 and other investors. The company was founded by Will Peteroy and Josh Carlson, two security professionals who met while working as a part of Microsoft’s Security Response team.

The company is still in stealth mode, so details about Icebrg’s product are scarce, though it’s focused on network security. Peteroy told GeekWire in an interview that one of the company’s goals with its product was to shift the balance of power in security situations to favor defenders rather than attackers.

Peteroy and Carlson are bringing some serious security chops to bear on whatever it is they’re building: both previously worked at the NSA, before coming to Microsoft at different times to work on security.

Peteroy served as a security response strategist, and has worked on product security for Windows and Internet Explorer. Carlson managed security response for the Windows Platform, and also managed security breach investigations and response for products like Xbox Live and OneDrive.

As a part of the deal, Madrona Principal David Rosenthal will join Icebrg’s board of directors.

“The Icebrg team has a unique combination of experiences and a technological approach that takes both a sophisticated and refreshing angle on protecting our core networks – from financial services, to big retailers, to healthcare to the government,” Rosenthal said in a press release. “It is exciting to work with a team that has created everything from military grade defense to securing some of the biggest and most important software platforms on the globe at Microsoft.”
