xboxIt’s a big day for the video game industry down in Los Angeles, setting the stage for the next several years in the console business.

Microsoft and Sony will be making dueling presentations at the E3 video-game convention, laying out their plans for their next-generation consoles, and trying to win over the traditional base of core gamers.

Microsoft is promising a heavy focus on games at its presentation today after concentrating primarily on the entertainment capabilities of the Xbox One during the initial unveiling last month. One big question is how the new-and-improved Kinect sensor — which will ship with every Xbox One — will translate into new gameplay experiences.

Microsoft’s E3 live stream starts at 9:30 a.m., available for viewing on Xbox.com, Xbox Live and Spike TV.

Sony, which is expected to give its first real glimpse of the PlayStation 4 hardware at E3, starts its event at 5:30 p.m. tonight.

Both companies are competing not only against each other, and Nintendo, but also against tablets, smartphones and other devices increasingly competing for attention — and dollars — in the expanding world of video games.

Kotaku has an early look at the Microsoft banner outside the convention hall, with the cryptic message, “All in One. Input One.” The company last week tried to dispel some of the biggest concerns about Xbox One, clarifying its policies on used games and privacy.
