Good news for gamers looking to save cash on their next purchase: Valve’s Steam Summer Sale kicks off today.
Bad news for gamers looking to save cash on their next purchase: the Steam Store website is down.
The annual sale from Valve, the Bellevue-based company behind the Steam gaming platform, is luring so much traffic that the Steam Store shut down for a short period of time this afternoon.
This happened for me around 4 p.m., but then the site started working again. Although at 4:19 p.m., I got the same error message again. The Steam Summer Sale led to huge traffic spikes last year for Valve, and it looks like the same is already happening this year.
People seem angry:
I CANT EVEN BUY ANYTHING FROM THE STEAM STORE BECAUSE THE STORE KEEPS GOING DOWN FROM HEAVY TRAFFIC SHIT

Wow, what a fucking surprise that the steam store is down. Not like they have a “Summer Sale” going on right now or anything. — Cboys1994 (@Cboys1994) July 11, 2013
The steam store being down on the day it starts its summer sales is quite annoying — Johnny Kernisky (@TheJohnnyK) July 11, 2013
The sale lasts until July 22 and you can get some pretty nice discounts on games like Defiance and BioShock Infinite. Valve will also be doing daily deals and flash sales for the next 11 days.
