xbox1It’s looking more like we could be seeing (or at least hearing about) the next Xbox sometime next month. Two longtime Microsoft reporters, Paul Thurrott and Tom Warren, are reporting that Microsoft is planning a May 21 event to provide the first details of its next-generation home console.

Thurrott, of the Windows Supersite, first offered the tidbit on the What the Tech podcast last week, and Tom Warren of The Verge says he understands the date to be accurate. Microsoft isn’t commenting on the reports.

No official details have been announced, but the new console should bring an upgrade for the company’s Kinect motion-sensor along with a rumored requirement for the Xbox to be connected to the Internet to play games. In general, Microsoft has been expanding the Xbox to become much more of a home-entertainment device, and the next console should continue that trend.

Thurrott says he believes Microsoft will also refresh the Xbox 360 and sell it for $99.

Microsoft rival Sony announced its first details of the PlayStation 4 in February.

The event would come in advance of the E3 game convention in June. Code-named Durango, the next Xbox was discussed behind closed doors last fall during a patent trial between Microsoft and Google.
