ibmIBM today launched a new advertising campaign today that seeks to bolster its cloud-computing business with a competitive swipe at Amazon — saying that IBM’s cloud “powers 270,000 more websites than Amazon.”

The campaign, which includes a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal, follows Amazon’s win of a $600 million cloud computing contract over IBM.

Last week, IBM dropped its legal challenge to that contract, following a court ruling in Amazon’s favor last month. IBM, separately inked a $1 billion cloud services contract with the Department of the Interior in August.

The claim in IBM’s ad is based on data from HostCabi.net. SoftLayer, a cloud computing provider and hosting company acquired by IBM earlier this year, is ranked as the No. 2 worldwide website hoster based on the data from that site, with Amazon coming in at No. 9.
