A federal jury in New York found Nintendo guilty of infringing on an inventor’s patented 3-D display technology for the 3DS handheld gaming device.

On Wednesday, the jury hit Nintendo with $30.2 million in damages to be awarded to 30-year ex-Sony employee Seijiro Tomita.

Back in 2011, Tomita sued Nintendo over 3-D imaging technology that he claimed to develop. Tomita argued that Nintendo used his patented approach without permission.

Nintendo tried to claim that it isn’t using key aspects of Tomita’s patent, which removes the need for 3D glasses to view 3D animations on the 3DS.
