billnyedancing1OK, so the judges weren’t all that impressed with Bill Nye’s dancing debut on Dancing With The Stars Monday night.

“It was like being waxed,” judge Len Goodman said afterward. “Painful when it happened, lovely when it was over.”

But aside from his dance moves — which weren’t even that bad — I thought The Science Guy was awesome.

When he first “met” partner Tyne Stecklein, Nye showed up in a slick outfit and presented her with a flower in a flask. Then, naturally, he proceeded to quiz Stecklein on science, giving her a way to remember the difference between “flask,” and “beaker”  — so smooth, Bill.

“This might be the best example, in history, of Beauty and the Geek,” Nye said in between dance practice.

billnyedancing3When it came time to shine Monday night, the pair opened their routine with what seemed to be a Frankenstein-ish theme. It was actually pretty hilarious, with huge bubbling flasks everywhere and Nye dressed in his classic lab coat/bowtie combo. Nye appeared to be working on Stecklein, who laid still on an operating table.

Suddenly she sprung up, and apparently this meant it was time to dance. The set ended a few minutes later with Nye and Stecklein drinking out of beakers and the crowd cheering “Bill! Bill! Bill!,” reminiscent of his TV show intro.

The two male judges lambasted Nye, but at least Carrie Ann Inaba had something nice to say.

“You’re the kind of contestant that makes Dancing With The Stars the special show that it is,” Inaba said.

Unfortunately for us, Nye has the lowest point total heading into the first elimination round next week. ABC better hope he can do a little better, because I sure as heck am not watching this show without him.
