Most of the time, publicity stunts are lame. And sometimes, well, sometimes something like this comes along.

Spokane, Wash.-based online retailer GreenCupboards will attempt to construct the world’s largest handmade, recycled piece of paper to break the Guinness World Record. The team will begin construction at 4 a.m. Friday by mixing up recycled paper into pulp, constructing the frame and pouring the mix.

The finished product should be 1,200 square feet, using 800 pounds of recycled paper the team has been collecting for months, along with donations from local businesses. Other area companies will also help their paper-making collaboration, including Earthworks Recycling, Lowe’s and Coffman Engineers.

We’re still blown away by the fact that a record even existed for the world’s largest handmade, recycled piece of paper.

Even if the GreenCupboard crew doesn’t bust the Guinness record, it’s still a big week for them. The company has just moved into the McKinstry Innovation Center, 850 E. Spokane Falls Blvd., becoming the first tenant in the Center.

Official festivities kick off at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the McKinstry with GreenCupboards CEO Josh Neblett and reps from McKinstry and the Spokane Mayor’s office saying a few words. Everyone in attendance is invited to plant seeds in the paper. Once it dries and this whole record business is in the can, participants can come back to GreenCupboards to break off a piece of paper to take home and plant, which is a really good idea of what to do with a 1,200 square foot piece of paper.

GreenCupboards, the online retailer of eco-friendly products, was the winner of a regional business plan competition and founded in 2008 by Neblett, Sarah Wollnick and their adjunct professor Tom Simpson. The site now carries about 15,000 items from more than 600 sources.

GreenCupboards folks, we would love to see pictures of your ginormous piece of paper when you’re done. Good luck!
