Remember those digital picture frames that let you automatically send pictures of the kids over the Internet to grandma and grandpa’s living room? This week’s App of the Week, called Familiar, is a lot like that, except it uses your existing screens and devices as the frame.

Developed by a group of iLike veterans, the service is available in apps for Android, Kindle Fire, iPhone and iPad, but downloads are also available for Mac and PC, allowing users to also share photos quickly with family members who don’t have smartphones or tablets. Pictures can be viewed by family members on their devices, or the photos can show up automatically on the screensaver of their computers, without them having to check their email.

A big part of idea is to make it easier to share with those who might not be as tech-savvy. Plus it has the added benefit of sparing your Facebook friends of those endless pictures of your kids.

That said, photos can be added from sites including Facebook, Picasa and Flickr, as well as the photo library on a tablet or phone.
