One last scene before closing the book on this year’s Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle: Toward the end of the Gearbox Software panel yesterday afternoon, the CEO of the Texas-based game developer, Randy Pitchford, had his own Oprah moment — handing out cards with codes to redeem a free copy of Borderlands 2 whenever it’s released.
Then he departed from the Oprah script. In exchange for the free game, he asked the crowd to do something unusual, leading the crowd in an elaborate oath in which they promised, among other things, to purchase other titles from publisher 2K Games if they have the means.
