By Andy Sack

I recently met wtih David Gibbons at Zillow — they’re head of social media.  It was a great meeting with lots of interesting points. One of the things we talked about was the press coverage surrounding Tiger Woods and how this news is in both the main stream media as well as social media. He made the point that social media — and Twitter in particular — are really a form of news coverage of the individual person. He’s totally right. When someone writes about you on a social media site — whether it be Facebook, Twitter, Linked-in — “press” is being written about you. In fact, you are a celebrity in your own social circle. Think about what this means! It’s powerful. You want to stand out — you want to control your message and get in front of your own story — whatever that story is. Oh and by the way — if there’s negative “press” about you in your social media — you want to get out in front of the story.  You’ll want to comment and get out your version of the story. As I mentioned, there are a lot of other points of interest from this meeting and taking this meeting to heart — I’ll be tweeting about them over the next few days.  Forgive me for the self promotion, but it’s Friday and I want to be a celebrity for a day….you can follow David on Twitter @DavidGibbons and you can follow me @asackof seattle
