Former Intel executive Diane Bryant, who joined Google Cloud just last November to give some executive support to Diane Greene, is leaving the company.
Business Insider reported Tuesday that Bryant is no longer working for Google’s Cloud unit, and Google confirmed her departure in the report. Bryant had a very long career at Intel helping it capture nearly all of the market for data center processors, selling to big cloud companies like Google and Amazon Web Services before joining one of her most prominent customers last November.
It’s not at all clear what led to Bryant’s departure, but Google Cloud has had a tumultuous six months, with growing employee dissent over Google’s work with the military and its pursuit of the $10 billion Department of Defense cloud contract. The company continues to look up at Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure in the cloud market, although it did disclose during this period that combined revenue from Google Cloud and G Suite reached $1 billion a quarter.
Now all eyes will turn to Intel, as Bryant might be on the short list to replace former Intel CEO Brian Krzanich after his hasty departure from the chipmaking giant a few weeks ago. Intel has never hired an external candidate to be CEO during its 50-year history, but Bryant’s tenure at Google was a blip against a 32-year career at Intel.
