Microsoft is contemplating a “multibillion-dollar revamp” of its headquarters campus in Redmond, Wash., according to a report this morning by Bloomberg News, citing anonymous people familiar with the company’s plans.

The renovation would move the company toward more open, collaborative workspaces, embracing the popular trend in the tech industry, Bloomberg reports.

Some Microsoft divisions, including the Developer Division, have already renovated their spaces in this way, shifting away from private offices. Open floorplans are a controversial topic among many tech workers, with some contending that they make them less productive.

Bloomberg reports that Microsoft hasn’t yet decided whether to move forward with the plan, but the company has hired the architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill to consider options.

The report says that the project could include new construction and renovated buildings, with new amenities including restaurants, retail spaces and potentially apartments for visiting employees and interns.

Microsoft declined to comment specifically on the Bloomberg story, but said in a statement, “We continually work on Microsoft campus plans to anticipate future needs.”
