win10_windows_startscreen1_webMicrosoft released its first public preview of Windows 10 for phones this morning, providing a glimpse of the next version of its operating system for Windows Phones, and looking for early feedback from loyal Windows users.

New features include interactive notifications, an updated Photos app, full-size background images on the Start screen, and updated speech-to-text capabilities. The operating system shares a codebase with other versions of Windows 10, as part of Microsoft’s effort to create a unified platform across all types of devices.

As with the Windows 10 preview for PCs and tablets, the version is being distributed through the Windows Insider Program. But before you sign up and install the new version on your phone, note this warning from Microsoft’s Gabe Aul, who heads up the program.

“This is the earliest publicly available preview we’ve ever done for Windows on phones. This preview is still very much under development and you’re going to see some rough edges. … You will encounter bugs. You will see experiences that are clearly just not done yet, and UX that lacks polish at this point. DON’T WORRY! It will improve as we go and new features, stability and performance improvements, and more polished UX will come at each step.”

Here is Microsoft’s video rundown with highlights from the build.
