This time of year, checking the weather in the morning can be a necessary (if disappointing) exercise. Funny or Die – yes, the same company that runs the comedy website of the same name – wants to make it a bit more enjoyable.

geekwireapp2The new Funny or Die Weather app for the iPhone brings users the current weather and a forecast along with a witty quip like “Daily Reminder: Behind every couch on the sidewalk there’s a disgusting story.” It’s a way to inject a little levity into what would otherwise be a fairly humdrum app experience. Best of all, it’s free.

People who yearn for joke-filled page-a-day calendars will love the one-liners inside the app. It’s brand new, so I can’t tell if they’ll repeat any time soon, but all of the ones I’ve seen have brought a smile to my face when I open up the app. The weather forecasts are good, too: at a glance, it’s easy to see what the high and low temperature for the day will be, and users can scroll down on a given page to get an hour-by-hour and five day forecast.

IMG_0397It’s fairly comparable to Apple’s built-in weather app, but with the added benefit of a few good jokes. Funny or Die Weather is also cleanly designed, and looks like it fits in perfectly with iOS 8. This is the sort of app that most people will almost certainly get a kick out of.

Of course, weather junkies who aren’t amused by the one-liners will want to go with a different app. Funny or Die Weather is just a very elegant re-skin of data from the Weather Channel-owned Weather Underground service. It won’t offer some of the more comprehensive features that other dedicated apps like Dark Sky do, but it can certainly beat them in the humor department.

Overall, this is exactly the sort of app I’ll be happy to have so I can get a quick smile as I’m trying to decide whether or not I need an umbrella when I walk out the door. [Editor’s note: Please forgive Blair. He’s a Californian.]

Funny or Die Weather is available for free on the iOS App Store.
