Alibaba has invested $590 million into Meizu Technology, an unknown Chinese handset maker that is estimated to have less than 2 percent of market share in China, Reuters reports. The deal will help the Chinese e-commerce giant launch its mobile operating system, called YunOS, into the market using Meizu’s hardware. Alibaba has been interested in launching its own smartphone for some time. A majority of the Chinese population accesses the Internet using a smartphone or tablet as demonstrated by Alibaba’s financial results. In final three months of 2014, Alibaba said sales coming from mobile devices accounted for 42 percent of overall sales.
