lyft-pinkLyft is offering up a way for part-time drivers to earn $400 per month by driving with others to and from their workplace every day.

The company today debuted a new program called “Driver Destination,” an extension of its Lyft Line carpooling service. The new feature allows drivers to receive Lyft Line requests from passengers that are more or less traveling in the same direction, with “minimal detours.”

The idea is to have those that rarely or never drive for Lyft use “Driver Destination” for their work commutes or when they’re out running errands.

“With the latest evolution of Lyft Line, now these drivers can easily turn their daily solo drives into shared rides,” the company wrote in a blog post.

Lyft said that drivers who use the new service can make $400 per month if they pick up passengers on the way to work and back home at the end of the day ($10 average earnings per ride x 2 = $20 per day x 20 workdays per month = $400).

The company said it developed Lyft Line knowing that it would implement something like “Driver Destination” later on, and noted that “this is a significant step toward our vision of enabling all car-owners to fill the empty seats in their cars.” It noted that 80 percent of commuters drive to work alone, and how “Driver Destination” can be now used in conjunction with the new Lyft for Work program.

Lyft Line is currently available in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
