entry9-1The Wii U may not be selling well compared to its competition, but that may not matter to Nintendo’s faithful.

The Japanese gaming company’s American subsidiary announced today that “Super Smash Bros.” for the Wii U sold more than 490,000 copies in the U.S. during its first weekend available for purchase, the most any game for the console has sold during that period.

It’s good news for Nintendo, which has been looking for smash hits on its latest home console. The company turned a profit last quarter thanks to increased console and software sales driven by “Mario Kart 8,” which previously held the sales record broken by “Super Smash.”

Still, the success of this title may also be a key symptom of the problem facing the Wii U: Nintendo’s first-party games have performed well on the console, but third-party developers have been hard-pressed to see similar results. A small catalog of third party titles may be a key component to the Wii U’s comparatively low sales. despite being out for a year longer than the PS4 and Xbox One, the console has fallen behind both of those offerings in terms of units sold.
