Iowa, that little center of the Heartland that is not Idaho, is not particularly known for innovation. But sometimes that little state will pull something out of its hat in between those annoying run-ups to the presidential races that makes us remember it’s there.

The state announced it will allow people to use their smartphones as their driver licenses, likely starting sometime in 2015, according to the Des Moines Register.

The free app will be accepted by cops and at the airport, which is an awesome system in case you forget your real license or lose it. “We are really moving forward on this, Department of Transportation director Paul Trombino told Gov. Terry Branstad. “The way things are going, we may be the first in the nation.”

Iowa: Smartphone licenses, butter cows and John Wayne. But you still have a long way to go to make up for Joni Ernst.
