Brooklynites will soon have a new option for grocery delivery, thanks to Amazon. The company will start delivery to Brooklyn’s Park Slope neighborhood on Friday, giving it a toe-hold in New York City, a spokesperson for the company told GeekWire.

The company will be expanding out from Park Slope – a neighborhood home to young families and professionals – to other zip codes in Brooklyn soon. The news was first reported by Re/code.

Fresh-3319Users who choose to get items delivered by Fresh can choose from a variety of products from Amazon, as well as items sourced from local merchants. And yes, that includes decent bagels.

Unlike other locales, Brooklyn Prime members who live inside the delivery area will be able to get Fresh deliveries for free through the end of this year. San Franciscans who want to use Amazon’s grocery delivery service have to pay for a $299 Prime Fresh membership, as do people who are using the service in Southern California.

Today’s news comes almost a month after a report surfaced claiming that the company planned to start delivery to New York City. Amazon is reportedly coordinating Fresh deliveries out of a warehouse in Avenel, New Jersey (which is within striking distance of Brooklyn), though Amazon didn’t discuss its delivery logistics with GeekWire.

This expansion is a key move for Amazon, which is slowly growing its grocery delivery business around the country. The Seattle-based company is competing with a variety of grocery delivery players in each market it enters, including Instacart, a startup founded by former Amazon engineer Apoorva Mehta.
