google-carGoogle took a step forward on Monday to get its Android software into more cars, announcing a new group called the Open Automotive Alliance that includes companies like Audi, GM, Honda and Hyundai.

The group, which also includes chipmaker Nvidia, will work together to make Android’s OS available inside vehicles beginning this year.

In a statement, the OAA said it’s “aimed at accelerating auto innovation with an approach that offers openness, customization and scale, key tenets that have already made Android a familiar part of millions of people’s lives.”

Apple and Microsoft, who have already signed partnerships with companies like Ford and Chevrolet, are also competing with Google in a battle for in-car entertainment supremacy.

The “connected car” is one of the most-anticipated technologies at CES 2014 in Las Vegas, with several companies showing off new advancements and integrations. We’ll be at Toyota’s press conference later today, so check back for more on that this afternoon.
