customize_hero_2xHave you always wanted a case for your Kindle with kittens on it? Well, now’s your chance, and it’s just in time for the holidays.

That’s right, folks: Amazon is offering free personalization on a line of cases and skins for its entire line of e-readers and tablets. The company announced today that shoppers will be able to customize the case for their tablet with a photo of their choosing (within reason, of course), or pick from a gallery of licensed images, including content from Breaking Bad, Star Trek and Peanuts. The customization will be handled by Cafepress, which also does personalization for a whole bunch of other products like t-shirts, mugs, and smartphone cases.

“With this new service, we’re making it possible for customers to dream up virtually any design and seamlessly turn it into a Kindle cover—at no additional cost,” Peter Larsen, Vice President for Amazon Kindle said in a press release. “We’ve also created designs exclusive to Amazon that work perfectly with our new Origami covers to give customers even more options. We’re excited to bring this all-new technology to Kindle accessories and we can’t wait to see what customers come up with.”

Amazon isn’t doing anything truly revolutionary, of course. Custom skins and cases have long been a component of the accessory industry that has grown up around smartphones and tablets. But Apple, Google and Microsoft aren’t racing to craft first-party custom case solutions. Heck, most of Apple’s cases have been monochromatic, with the most notable exceptions being iPod socks.
