An internship. An acceptance letter. A scholarship opening the doors to college.
Just one opportunity can significantly change your life’s trajectory.
At Washington State Opportunity Scholarship, we’re in the business of opening doors for students across the state. We believe more Washington students should have a shot at the jobs of our vibrant economy and a bright future. And we think the work is as important as it is powerful.
But as a statewide public-private effort, we can’t do it alone. We need the support of private business and individuals. Because it does take a village. And in our case, it’s under legislation.
Last summer we were lucky to partner with local business owner Amy Hanson, CEO of Hanson Consulting Group, who was inspired by trajectory-changing opportunities in her own life, and wanted to help make a real difference for local students by investing in their future. Through WSOS, Hanson and her husband, Pete, made a $100,000 gift to help local students attend Central Washington University, putting college, and opportunity, within reach.
“I have found my passion, which is helping students succeed in reaching their educational and professional dreams,” Hanson said.
The investment, which is already at work supporting twenty-seven students at CWU, Amy’s alma mater, will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the State per the statute that governs this program.
For WSOS Scholars like Bryttney Deniston, a first-year CWU student from Raymond, Washington, we know the support is a game-changer.
“I felt incredibly supported and at ease when I received the support because I was having trouble with paying for college,” said Deniston. “The scholarship has helped me to focus on my school because I feel better about my financials.”
In addition to scholarship support, these students, who join a community of WSOS Scholars studying at colleges and universities across the state, will also have access to valuable mentorship, professional development and career-readiness opportunities.
Hanson’s passion for scholarships and education is personal, as someone who blazed her own trail to college and career success, and it has become a philanthropic focus for the entire Hanson Consulting Group organization. Members of the HCG team plan to participate in WSOS programs including mentorship and interview coaching.
Established in 2011 by the Legislature, WSOS is one of the first programs of its kind to bridge the gap between private and public funding.
“It is really important to me that the money gifted impacts as many students as possible. The dollar-by-dollar match by the State is unparalleled to any other foundation or scholarship program in the country,” Hanson said. “We look forward to joining these students on their journeys.”
We are grateful for the generosity of the Hansons, Hanson Consulting Group, and that of our many partners across the state. When it comes to opening doors to opportunity for future talent here at home, we’re proud to work with the best in the business.
