Block, the financial services and mobile payments company founded by former Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, has laid off 43 workers in Washington, according to a notice from the state’s Employment Security Dept.

The layoffs appear to be part of broader cuts at the company, which Business Insider reported could affect close to 1,000 employees. The cuts impact Block workers at Square, Cash App and Foundational, according to the report, which cited a memo from Dorsey on Tuesday.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) put March 30 as the beginning date of separations in Washington.

Square first arrived in Seattle in 2017 with office space kitty-corner from the Spheres on Amazon’s South Lake Union campus. In March 2019, the company moved to a 14,000-square-foot floor at the Financial Center building in downtown Seattle, giving it room for approximately 100 people at the time.

GeekWire reached out to Block for more information about the layoffs and the impact in Seattle and we’ll update this story when we hear back.

Block cut 40 employees from its music streaming service Tidal in December, and Dorsey made it clear at the time that more cuts were coming.

A Block spokesperson told Business Insider that it planned to cap head count at about 12,000 employees, a reduction from the 13,000 workers it had late last year.
