Paul Misener, Amazon’s vice president of global innovation policy and communications, is stepping down.

Misener joined Amazon in 1999 and was a vice president for nearly 23 years. He helped establish Amazon’s global public policy organization and led it from 2000 to 2016.

Misener negotiated sales tax deals with politicians and testified before Congress to push the U.S. government to adopt regulations for automated drone flight.

“It was my great privilege and pleasure to help build Amazon and, although it has grown dramatically in scale and scope over my tenure, in many endearing ways it still feels like the young company that interviewed me way back in 1999,” Misener wrote on LinkedIn. His last day is March 1.

Misener also chaired a FAA technical subcommittee in 2013 that played a role in allowing commercial airline passengers to use portable electronics during taxi, takeoff, and landing.

Before joining Amazon, Misener was a manager at Intel and a partner at Wiley, Rein & Fielding. He is based in Washington, D.C.
