As Amazon works toward its goal of net carbon neutrality by 2040, the company on Wednesday announced another deal to purchase electric delivery vehicles, this time with international automaker Stellantis.
Seattle-based Amazon is the first commercial customer for the company’s Ram ProMaster Battery Electric Vehicle. The vans are scheduled to start rolling out in 2023. The announcement didn’t provide specific numbers about the purchase, saying the deal would put “thousands of BEV ProMasters on the road every year.”
Amazon previously committed to buying 100,000 electric delivery vans from Rivian, with the first 10,000 potentially coming online this year. Amazon has participated in numerous, multi-billion dollar investment rounds raised by American automaker Rivian.
Rivian’s stock price took a dive on Wednesday after Amazon shared news about the Stellantis deal.

Amsterdam-based Stellantis formed last year as a merger between the Italian-American conglomerate Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and the French PSA Group.
Amazon has in recent years purchased “tens of thousands” of fossil-fuel powered delivery vehicles from Stellantis brands, including Ram cargo vans and vehicles from Fiat, Peugeot and Citroën.
Transportation is one of the largest sources of Amazon’s carbon emissions as the massive retailer ships goods around the world. The COVID-19 pandemic drove a massive surge in Amazon’s online sales, accompanied by an increase in its carbon footprint. Its emissions grew 19% in 2020, according to its most recent sustainability report.
