Nintendo’s new Switch: The gaming giant Tuesday showed off the Switch OLED model, the latest version of its popular handheld console. It features a 7-inch 720p OLED screen — up from 6.2 inches on the original Switch — along with an adjustable stand for tabletop mode, a new dock with a wired LAN port, 64GB of internal storage, and enhanced audio. It comes in “white set” and “neon red/neon blue set” and goes on sale Oct. 8 for $350 — up from the $300 original Switch. All existing Switch games and Joy-Con are compatible with the OLED model.

No 4K: Previous reports hinted that the new Switch may support 4K but today’s announcement did not mention the feature.

Switch family: The OLED model is the third Switch console — it is just barely longer and heavier than the original, and battery life is the same. Nintendo began selling the Switch Lite in 2019.

Quotable: “The new Nintendo Switch (OLED model) is a great option for players who want to experience the new vibrant screen when playing in handheld and tabletop mode,” Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser said in a statement. “With the addition of this new model to the Nintendo Switch family of systems, people have an additional choice of a system that best fits the gaming experience they desire – whether it’s Nintendo Switch (OLED model), Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch Lite.”

Switch sales: Nintendo has led the U.S. console market for the past few years with its Switch, which has lifetime sales of 84.59 million as of the March quarter. Switch sales were up 44% year-over-year in the March quarter.
