Will Microsoft take Windows to 11?
It’s not yet clear if it will be worthy of a full jump in the version number from Windows 10, but Microsoft is teasing a major refresh of its flagship operating system, inviting media to a June 24 virtual event where it’s promising to “unveil the next generation of Windows.”
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Chief Product Officer Panos Panay will headline the event.
Zac Bowden of Windows Insider reports that the company will unveil a long-rumored Windows update, code-named “Sun Valley,” at the event.
“Sun Valley is expected to deliver a new Start menu and Taskbar layout, icons, sounds, app designs, and fluid animations. Microsoft may take this user experience rejuvenation effort as a chance to ship a ‘new’ version of Windows, and we think it could possibly fall under the Windows 11 moniker,” writes Bowden, who broke the news of the Sun Valley update last fall.
The future of Windows has been a subject of speculation since Nadella mentioned the update at Microsoft’s Build developer conference last week.
“Soon we will share one of the most significant updates of Windows of the past decade to unlock greater economic opportunity for developers and creators,” Nadella said. “I’ve been self-hosting it over the past several months, and I’m incredibly excited about the next generation of Windows.”
