Washington State University is launching a new life sciences incubator in Spokane, Wash., designed to help startups grow out of the university while also connecting regional entrepreneurs to faculty experts.

Spinout Space in Spokane (sp³nw) is getting off the ground with a $250,000 anchor grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, WSU announced on Thursday. The pledge will help sp3nw to incubate WSU research and innovation into biotech, pharma, diagnostics, and medical device companies.

Professor Glenn Prestwich, director of the space, said there was a “long unmet need in the state of Washington” for such an entity “to identify, support, incubate and accelerate early-stage life science and health care companies.”

Through sp3nw, entrepreneurs have access to office and lab space adjacent to the WSU Health Sciences Spokane campus. The building currently known as Ignite NW will be rebranded. Satellite sp3nw sites will be located on other WSU campuses in Washington (Pullman, Vancouver, Tri-Cities, and Everett).
