Streaming television is bigger than ever, as a much-needed distraction during the ongoing pandemic. And it’s back on top in the annual march to awards season supremacy.
Netflix led all networks Tuesday with 160 nominations as the Television Academy announced contenders for the 72nd Emmy Awards. HBO, which eclipsed the streaming service at this time last year on the strength of its fantasy series “Game of Thrones,” fell to second with 107 nods.
The back-and-forth battle became real in 2018 when Netflix first made history as the most-nominated network.
HBO did have the most-nominated program as “Watchmen” collected 26 nods, including for best limited series. The HBO drama series “Succession” and Netflix’s “Ozark” both had 18 nods.
Amazon led the comedy category behind the continued strength of the Prime Video series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” which gained 20 nominations. Amazon scored 30 total nominations, compared to 47 last year.
Apple TV+ and Disney+ both received their first Emmy nominations, for “The Morning Show” and “The Mandalorian.”

This is the first time in Emmys history the outstanding drama category contains not a single show broadcast on an over-the-air network. Official final shot in streaming/cable revolution.

Last year, HBO had the most Emmy wins with 37, followed by Netflix (27) and Amazon (15), which was riding the strength of the comedy series “Fleabag” at the time.
The Emmy Awards will air Sept. 20 on ABC and be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
