Amazon is implementing new restrictions on third-party sellers that stock items in the tech giant’s warehouses ahead of the holiday shopping season.

The limits come after months of disruptions to Amazon’s ordinarily seamless e-commerce business driven by the pandemic.

Starting August 16, Amazon will restrict the number of items that all third-party sellers can stock in fulfillment centers to approximately three months worth of inventory. The changes will be in place through the end of the year. Amazon says the majority of sellers will not be disrupted by the change in a letter obtained by Business Insider. Most sellers stock about one and a half months of inventory at Amazon fulfillment centers, according to the company.

The goal is to ensure enough room for inventory that sells big during the holiday season. Amazon told CNET that the change shouldn’t impact customers who want to buy top-selling items, like entertainment devices.

“We are preparing early for the upcoming holiday season,” an Amazon spokesperson told GeekWire. “Our commitment to our selling partners has never been more steadfast and we are taking steps now to help ensure all sellers using Fulfillment by Amazon have space for their products.”
