The two most valuable companies in the world are tech corporations — do you know what they are? And do you know where they are headquartered?

In fact, neither of the companies are based in Silicon Valley, the mecca of tech. They’re both actually headquartered in the Seattle region.
Amazon and Microsoft hold the title of world’s most valuable companies — a fact largely overlooked by folks living in the Bay Area.
That’s what we found when GeekWire took a quick trip south to the San Francisco Bay Area, where we chatted up the locals and tested their tech knowledge. It was a reminder that sheer power and influence of tech companies headquartered in the Seattle region is often overlooked or forgotten by those outside the Pacific Northwest, particularly inside the San Francisco and Silicon Valley bubble. This video debuted at the recent GeekWire Awards. As of Friday’s market close, Microsoft was the world’s most valuable company, with a market capitalization of $974 billion, while Amazon is at $930 billion. Apple is worth $907 billion and Google parent Alphabet is at $808 billion.
Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft have been trading places over the past several months atop this list. Microsoft recently reached a financial milestone of a $1 trillion market capitalization for the first time, becoming the second company to do so in history after Apple.
