The Amorphophallus titanum, or corpse plant, takes about seven years to produce a bloom which only lasts about 48 hours. The rare event drew a crowd more than a week ago inside The Sphere’s on Amazon’s Seattle campus — and now a timelapse video shows off the spectacle in just seconds.
In an Instagram post on Tuesday, Amazon thanked visitors who came to check out the plant, which is native to Sumatra and was dubbed “Morticia” by the horticulture team in charge of the care of hundreds of plant species inside the glass orbs.
The corpse plant gets its name because of the foul odor it puts off, similar to a rotting corpse, while it is blooming. The scent is used to attract pollinators.
For several days before blooming, Amazon pointed a video camera at the plant and live streamed the “action” on Twitch. More than 5,000 visitors streamed past in person on Oct. 20 to get a glimpse — and whiff — in person.
