Former Microsoft and General Motors CFO Christopher Liddell is the front-runner to become President Trump’s top economic adviser, according to a New York Times report.

Liddell was on Trump’s transition team and later joined the administration last year to serve as director of a the newly created American Technology Council, which aimed to help government agencies modernize their digital services. Citing two people briefed on the process, the Times reports that a decision has not been made, but Liddell is a favorite to become the next director of the National Economic Council following the resignation of Gary Cohn this week.

Liddell served as Microsoft’s CFO from 2005 to 2009. In 2010 he joined GM to be its CFO, but left after only a year.

The Trump administration was not Liddell’s first dalliance into politics. He was treasurer of the fundraising campaign for Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential bid and would have served as the executive director of the transition team had Romney won the election.
